The key to this is not to try to manage the entire process (impossible!) but rather to undertand the inputs, outputs, and dependencies at the various discrete stages.

I have formal business training in operations management. I know how to measure and manage progress. I understand the importance of communications and follow-up. I can get things done through layers and people.
